Vietnamese authorities have arranged two repatriation flights for nearly 400 Vietnamese citizens wishing to return home from Myanmar.

The two flights, operated by national carrier Vietnam Airlines, left Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on Thursday morning and headed to Yangon where 390 Vietnamese citizens were awaiting repatriation, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

The first flight left Hanoi at 9:00 am before picking up 195 Vietnamese citizens in Yangon.

It is expected to land in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang at 3:10 pm the same day.

The second flight left Hanoi at 10:00 am and is expected to land in Da Nang City with an additional 195 Vietnamese citizens at 4:10 pm.

After passengers disembark from the two flights, the planes will be loaded with cargo and sent to Hanoi.

The Embassy of Vietnam in Myanmar announced on Wednesday that it had coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant authorities to arrange the repatriation flights.

Space aboard the two flights was limited to Vietnamese citizens facing particularly difficult and urgent circumstances in Myanmar.

A representative from Vietnam Airlines said that strict COVID-19 prevention and control measures would be taken on the flights.

Passengers were previously required to fill in online health declarations and wear face masks and protective clothing during the repatriation process, according to the Tuoitrenews
