Vietnam records 18 new Covid-19 community transmissions

Health authorities confirmed 18 new Covid-19 community transmissions Wednesday evening, most of them in a Hanoi hospital that has been placed under a lockdown.

The latest additions take the total number of cases in the nation’s latest outbreak to 56.

Fourteen of the new cases, patients 3009-3022, were detected at the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Dong Anh District in the capital city. The source of the transmission has not been indentified yet.

Nine of the 14 are patients who were being treated at the hospital for other diseases. The remaining five are four family members of the patients and one medical staff.

The next four cases were recorded in southern and northern localities.

Patient 2997 is a 27-year-old woman who resides in Hoi An Town, Quang Nam Province. She is the wife of Patient 2982.

Patent 2998 is a 32-year-old woman from Da Nang City who tested positive for the virus in Hanoi. She’d arrived April 29 in the capital city from Da Nang on Vietnam Airlines flight VN160.

On May 2, she learned that another passenger on the same flight had tested positive and went to a quarantine facility.

Patient 2999 is a 44-year-old woman from Long Khanh Town in the southern province of Dong Nai. She works in Da Nang’s Hai Chau District and had come into direct contact with Patient 2982.

Patient 3002 is a 26-year-old man from the northern province of Hai Duong who also arrived in Hanoi on April 29 via flight VN160. He contacted a medical facility in the province after learning that the flight had an infected person.

The new cases bring the total number of local Covid-19 patients since April 27 to 56 in 10 localities, led by the northern provinces of Ha Nam and Vinh Phuc at 14, followed by Hanoi at five.

Also on Wednesday evening, the country reported eight imported Covid-19 cases.

Minister and Chairman of the Government Office, Tran Van Son, said Wednesday that the latest outbreak is basically under control, but the situation remains complicated and people should be on high alert and strictly follow protective measures.

The government has agreed to allocate VND12.1 trillion ($524 million) set aside from last year to purchase Covid-19 vaccines.

Vietnam has also extended its quarantine policy from 14 to 21 days for both foreign arrivals and those who come into contact with Covid-19 patients.

The national Covid-19 tally stands at 3,022 with 2,560 recoveries and 35 deaths.

Over 585,300 people have been vaccinated in 48 localities so far.
