Thanh Luong Cattle Market may not be what you imagine it to be as a standard trading place.

This special market is not simply a place where you can find cattle, but it is also a unique cultural feature of Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province. Opening on Mondays, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19, 26, 29 of the month, this is a place that you should not miss.

In terms of scale, Thanh Luong cattle market is the largest of its kind in Nghe An. Every day, about 350 buffaloes and cows are traded. What will catch your attention most, however, is how people manage to make such a large number of transactions in this particular context: flat and bare land surrounded by fences.

Unlike farmers in other communes, people in Thanh Luong do not raise cows, but buy and breed them until they are qualified to sell. However, this fact does not stop the people there from selling the cow and earning about 5 million VND (250 USD) per month. Sometimes luck visits the door, these people can even earn up to 10 million dong (500 USD) per month.

The market’s large scope allows it to reach sellers and sellers from districts other than Thanh Luong. Sometimes, even people from Ha Tinh province visit the cattle market. No matter where they come from, these people always follow a golden rule: bargain all the time! Besides, buyers often choose cows according to many other criteria: strong legs, round hooves, big horns, fat body, white teeth! Interestingly, even when giving money, people never buy a buffalo or cow with a white tail because they believe that buffalo will bring bad luck, including death to their family!
