Customs in Vietnam

Before traveling to Vietnam, you should inquire about customs regulations in the country. Some items may be prohibited whilst others are permitted but are required to be declared on arrival.

Do note that the information below is correct at the time of writing but is subject to change.

Duty-Free

Some products are exempt from tax on arrival. Below are some examples:

  • Alcoholic beverages: 1.5 litres of alcoholic beverages with 22% alcohol
  • 2 litres of alcoholic beverages with less than 22 % alcohol
  • 3 litres of beer
  • Tobacco: 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars
  • Other: 5 pounds of tea, 3 pounds of coffee, gifts worth less than 1 million VND

If the value of products that you have brought with you exceeds the authorized amount, you will have to complete a No. HQ/2002-PMD declaration form and pay excess duties.

To be declared

On arrival in Vietnam, you are required to declare:

  • Foreign currency if the sum exceeds US$ 5,000
  • Local currency if the sum exceeds 15 million VND
  • Gold if you are carrying more than 300 grams
  • Videotapes and CDs (these are often kept for screening and returned to you within a few days)

Prohibited products in Vietnam

Prohibited items for import into Vietnam are the following:

  • Weapons
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Firecrackers
  • Explosives
  • Military equipment
  • Drugs
  • Toxic chemicals
  • Dangerous toys
  • Anti-government and pornographic literature, etc
