  • Vietnam recorded 823 new Covid-19 cases Wednesday evening, bringing the daily total to a new peak of 2,924.
  • The total number of local cases since April 27 has reached 33,858 in 58 localities.

Vietnam’s daily Covid-19 tally nears 3000, of the new cases, 2,229 were recorded in Ho Chi Minh City, the current national epicentre of the pandemic, taking the city’s total to 18,802 in the latest Covid-19 wave. This is the first time HCMC was recording over 2,000 cases a day.

Most of the new cases were in isolated areas, and authorities are tracing contacts of 415 cases.

In the latest wave starting from April 27, Bac Giang has the second highest number of cases at 5,726, followed by Binh Duong at 1,887 and Bac Ninh at 1,672.

The total number of local cases since April 27 has reached 33,858 in 58 localities.

The national tally since the beginning of the pandemic early last year stands at 37,343 cases as of Wednesday night.

With three Covid-19 deaths Wednesday afternoon, the national death toll has gone up to 135.

Twelve localities have gone 14 days without any new case, while nine have done so for 30 days, according to VNExpress.

Pfizer will supply another 20mln vaccine doses to Vietnam, total over 51mln in 2021

The Vietnamese health ministry and Pfizer have reached an initial agreement on a deal for another 20 million doses of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to be used specifically for children aged between 12 and 18 years old.

The deal was reached during a meeting on Wednesday between health minister and Pfizer Vietnam Country Manager and Chief Representative.

Vietnam has about 9 million children in this group.

The Pfizer representative said the company is committed to bringing 20 million doses to the country within the fourth quarter of 2021 to serve the country’s inoculation efforts, which the ministry considers a good sign in the current global shortage, Vietnam News Agency reported.
