Thailand on Wednesday reported its second highest number of daily Covid-19 cases after a mass testing drive in the kingdom’s hardest-hit province.

Thailand’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced 819 total new infections on Wednesday, including 808 local transmissions, according to CNN.

The new cases are from a mass testing program being carried out in Samut Sakhon province – the origin of Thailand’s most recent wave, the CCSA said.

On Tuesday, the country also recorded 959 new cases of the novel coronavirus — including the 914 infections in Samut Sakhon announced on Monday evening — for an accumulated total of 14,646 since the start of the pandemic. No additional deaths were reported, leaving the toll at 75, the Bangkokpost reported.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the CCSA, said the high number of new cases resulted from intensified active case-finding in communities, which found 848 infections within 24 hours.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 449,073 in 24 hours to 100,270,602. The worldwide death toll went up by 9,597 to 2,157,355. The US had the most cases at 25.86 million, up 152,244, according to the data source.
