Located in Tan Ha village, Thanh Chuong district, Bach Ma temple is considered one of the most sacred temples in Nghe An.

Together with Con temple, Qua temple, Chieu Trung temple, Bach Ma temple greatly contribute to the religious life of the people in this region.

Bach Ma Temple was built to worship General Phan Da, a talented young man who made a great contribution to the glorious feat of King Le Lo before the Ming invaders of the 15th century. According to local legend, Phan Da was born in Chi Linh hamlet, Vo Liet commune. His talent showed at a very young age. When Le Loi’s famous Lam Son army arrived in Nghe An in 1424 to close its headquarters, Phan Da immediately applied to join the army. His intelligence was easily discovered by the military leaders and they soon assigned him an important position.

In the battles, Phan Da is always accompanied by a loyal white horse named “Thien Ly Ma” (A thousand miles horse), always supporting and helping him win. Thanks to that, Phan Da’s fame spread more and more and people began to respect him with the name Bach Ma god. Even after his death, people still believe that his heroic spirit continues to bless and save the country. A temple was erected in memory of the brave general and his horse Bach Ma.

As you can see today, Bach Ma Temple is a complex of 5 palaces, each with a three-way gate. They are arranged into different blocks of lower, middle and upper palaces to convey the idea of ​​harmony, solemnity and sanctity. Most of the constructions are made of wood and aesthetically carved. Throughout the temple, you can find images of fish, dragons, phoenixes, etc. as well as countless rare artifacts. If you are lucky enough to be present on the 9th and 10th of February (according to the lunar calendar), you can also attend interesting worshiping ceremonies of the temple.
